Understanding Routers for FTTC, HFC, and FTTP NBN Technologies

Connecting to the nbn: FTTC, HFC, and FTTP Setup Guide #

When you connect to the nbn via Fibre to the Curb (FTTC),
Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC), or Fibre to the Premises (FTTP),
your setup requirements are a little different compared to
Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Basement (FTTB).

This guide explains why these differences matter and how to ensure you have the right router for your home or business.

Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) #

What it is: FTTC brings fibre to a small pit near the street, then uses copper cabling to deliver the connection to your property.

Equipment: NBN Co supplies a connection box that plugs into your phone socket. You then connect a standard router (with a WAN/Ethernet port) to that box.

Router Requirement: A built-in VDSL modem is not required. A standard router with an Ethernet WAN port is all you need.

Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) #

What it is: HFC uses the same coaxial cables that were previously used for pay TV services.

Equipment: NBN Co provides a cable modem (often called the NBN Connection Box). This plugs into the coaxial wall socket, and you connect your router (via Ethernet) to the modem.

Router Requirement: A built-in VDSL modem is not required. A normal router with an Ethernet WAN port works perfectly.

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) #

What it is: FTTP delivers fibre optic cabling directly into your premises.

Equipment: NBN Co installs an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which includes an Ethernet port for connecting your router.

Router Requirement: A built-in VDSL modem is not required. A standard router with a WAN/Ethernet port will do the job.

Reusing Your Existing Modem #

In most cases, you can reuse your current modem or router. Around 9 out of 10 devices
can be reconfigured to work with FibreMax. Simply contact our support team, and we’ll walk you through the setup.

If you’d prefer a new router, we also supply FibreMax-optimised models for FTTC, HFC, and FTTP.
Unsure which one you need? Call our support team and we’ll help you pick the right option.
