How to Optimise Your Setup for Faster FTTP & HFC Speeds
Upgrading your NBN speed is just the beginning. To truly experience the benefits of NBN Accelerate Great, your home or business setup needs to be ready — from your Wi-Fi router to your cabling and devices.
And thanks to new NBN-supplied hardware, even the infrastructure inside your premises is getting a powerful boost.
Smarter In-Premises Optimisation
With more than 25 connected devices in the average household — and even more in modern businesses — getting the most from your upgraded plan means eliminating bottlenecks inside your network.
Here’s what matters most
Wi-Fi Router Compatibility
Older routers (especially those more than 5 years old) may not support the speeds your
new plan offers. For plans 500 Mbps and above, we recommend routers with Wi-Fi 6 or
Wi-Fi 7 capability.
Wired vs. Wireless
Wired connections using CAT 6 or better Ethernet cables provide faster, more stable
performance for desktops, smart TVs, and office hardware.
Mesh Systems for Larger Spaces
For multi-room homes or larger business premises, consider a mesh Wi-Fi system to
ensure consistent coverage and speed in every corner.

New NBN Hardware: Smaller, Smarter, and Future-Proof
As part of this national upgrade, NBN Co is rolling out new FTTP Network Termination Devices (NTDs) — the hardware that connects your premises to the fibre network.
Benefits include
Smarter Design
Compact, modern form with tidy cable management
Energy Efficient
Uses up to 40% less power than legacy units

Pro Tip
When you upgrade your NBN speed, make sure your internal setup can keep up — or you might not experience the full performance boost.

Frequently Asked Questions
About the NBN Speed Upgrade
NBN Accelerate Great is a nationwide upgrade initiative from NBN Co that launches on 15 September 2025. It will unlock significantly faster internet speeds — including multigigabit plans — for homes and businesses connected via Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) technology
FibreMax makes it easy. We’re one of the only providers in Australia that already shows which new speed tiers will be available at your address from launch day. Use our address checker on the Home or Business NBN pages to see what’s coming.
You might. To enjoy the full benefit of new plans like 500 Mbps, 1000 Mbps, or 2000 Mbps, you'll need a modern Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 router. Older routers may not support these speeds and could bottleneck your connection.
FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) delivers fibre-optic internet directly to your home or business, allowing for the highest speed tiers and future expansion (up to 8 Gbps). HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) also supports high speeds but has more physical limitations. Both will benefit from Accelerate Great, but the fastest plans are exclusive to FTTP.
In most cases, NBN Co will upgrade your Network Termination Device (NTD) automatically if your premises needs one to support the new speed tiers. The latest NTDs are smaller, energy-efficient, and support faster speeds and remote diagnostics.
If your address isn’t eligible right now, don’t worry — NBN is expanding FTTP availability throughout 2025. FibreMax can still connect you on the best plan available today, and we’ll notify you as soon as a speed upgrade becomes possible
As many as your router and network can handle! Most homes already use 25+ connected devices, and high-speed plans help reduce lag, buffering, and dropouts — even with smart TVs, consoles, laptops, and IoT devices all online at once.
Yes. FibreMax customers can order a qualifying plan now today and lock in their plan early. If you’re eligible for a speed upgrade in September, we’ll automatically apply it when available.
